Where have I been?/Whole Foods Product Review

So…. you might be wondering where I’ve been since my last post.   Here goes, I wanted to further my knowledge of working and learning more about the eco-friendly journey.   So I  was very determined about working for Whole Foods Market in the  Whole Body Department which deals with Supplements, Sports/Training supplements, Probiotics, Beauty and body care products.   I spent a few months learning and applying my customer service skills.  I met some pretty amazing people and co-workers; I learned so much during my time there.   So, now I’m back to doing more creative stuff to share what I’ve learned.

Here is a Whole Foods Product Review that I hope you’ll enjoy!

My first product to try out was the Tom’s of Maine 6 benefits in 1 Whole Care Mouth wash in Fresh Mint.   I must admit I’d never made mouth wash part of my dental routine.  So, I gave mouth wash a shot.
The product claims to have 6 benefits
-Fights cavities
-Restores minerals
-Strengthens enamel
-Freshens breath
-Cleans between teeth
The product is 16 FL.oz
The active ingredient: is Sodium Fluoride 0.02% (0.01% Fluoride ion)
Inactive ingredient: Water, glycerin, sorbitol, Aloe Barbadensis leaf juice, propanediol, xylitol, natural flavor, benzoic acid, phosphoric acid, disodium phosphate.
Also, Tom’s of Maine lists a lot of great benefits in how they run the Brand.
For example
No animal testing
No artificial colors, flavors, fragrance, or preservatives.
They share every ingredient, it’s purpose, and its source at www.tomsofmaine.com
Sustainable Practices
They strive to maximize recycled content and recyclability of their packaging.
5% of employee time to volunteering.  10% of profits to human and environmental goodness.
These are great standards and ones I really care about being an eco-friendly advocate.
I like that it is alcohol free, and that it can remineralize the teeth.  It does so with adding Aloe Vera which contains small amounts of minerals such as:
Aloe Vera is also a anti-inflammatory which is useful for people with sensitive gums or gingivitis.  There are also claims that Aloe can help whiten teeth.
Curious about Sorbital:
“Sorbitol is a naturally occurring sugar alcohol with a sweet taste that is found in many edible fruits, berries, and vegetables. Sorbitol was first discovered in the fresh juice of mountain ash berries in 1872. The sorbitol we use is derived from corn. In its natural state, sorbitol appears as a white crystalline powder.” Tom’s of Maine
both Sorbitol and propanediol are made from corn and are humectants.
Xylitol, has been shown to have added benefits for a person’s teeth, namely preventing tooth decay.  Held in the mouth, xylitol also stimulates saliva flow.
“In mouthwash disodium phosphate acts as a buffering agent that helps maintain the pH or acidity of the product. When disodium phosphate is combined with fluoride and phosphoric acid to form an acidulated phosphate fluoride  solution as outlined in the FDA’s Anticaries monograph, that solution promotes remineralization and helps prevent enamel dissolution.”Tom’s of Maine

Experience:  First thoughts, I didn’t anticipate much from a mouth wash.  I used it for about 2 weeks, twice a day.  First impression was that after brushing swishing for 1 minute my teeth felt very polished and smooth.  I was surprised with the results.  It did taste sweet and had an antiseptic taste to it, which I wasn’t a fan of but it did leave a squeaky clean feeling to my teeth and had a pleasant minty fresh taste.  It was able to get to hard to reach areas of my teeth which brushing doesn’t always get to.  Would I use Tom’s mouth wash again, yes.  I would definitely try to get one without fluoride.   Wow, I learned so much about what goes into a dental product and learned to be more discerning.

For the second product, I am reviewing the 365 Plant Protein Smoothie in the flavor “Coconut Almond.”

First of all the 365 price point is very budget friendly which is a plus.  I am familiar with Whey protein but I have not actually tried a plant-based protein before.  The product contains 15g grams of plant protein.  The protein comes from a blend of Pea protein, Sacha Inchi Seed Protein, Organic Hemp Seed Protein.  If you were wondering what a Sacha Inchi Seed was, I was too.  Apparently, I’ve eaten them before but had to google it.
“Grown in the Amazon Rainforest and the high Andes Mountains of Peru, sacha inchi has been part of the Inca diet for 3000 years. The sacha inchi plant, Plukenetia volubilis, is a rainforest vine, with star-shaped seed pods, meaning that these Inca peanuts are technically seeds, not nuts.”
What are the benefits of Sacha Inchi Seeds……
Sacha inchi is rich in proteinomega-3, -6, and -9, alpha tocopherol, vitamin E, and carotenoids (Vitamin A), and fiber. Its unique collection of nutrients provide notable benefits for the body. Controls cholesterol. Sacha inchi lowers BAD cholesterol(LDL) and raises GOOD cholesterol (HDL).
Is it a complete protein…..
Sacha Inchi Protein Benefits. Sacha Inchi is a complete protein, containing all 8 essential amino acids that our bodies cannot create. This super seed protein powder is 60% protein by weight—higher than many nuts and seeds.
Pea Protein is not a complete Protein, it does not contain all 8 essential amino acids; hence the pairings of the two with it.
What are Pea protein benefits….
It contains a rich source of Lysine,it’s essential for building connective tissue like skin, cartilage, and bones.  It does not contain dairy, which would not create allergies; great for those who are lactose-intolerant. It’s gluten-free and easier to digest.   It also contains iron the non-heme type iron found in plants.  Pea protein is low glycemic food and is low carb.
Processed with VSCO with f2 preset

It also contains Hemp Seed Protein which are rich in healthy fats and essential fatty acids. They are also a great protein source and contain high amounts of vitamin E, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, magnesium, sulfur, calcium, iron and zinc.
The 365 Plant Protein Smoothie also contains a Green Blend of 330mg which contains Spinach Powder, Organic Alfalfa Powder, Organic Kale Powder, Broccoli Powder.
Other ingredients include coconut, guar gum, stevia extract, sea salt, brown rice powder, papain powder (from papaya)
The product contains only 80 calories, 15 fat from calories 1g of carbohydrates 1g of sugar, it is sweetened with stevia.   It has 20mg of calcium and 4mg of iron.
I would say this is one to recommend if someone is trying to maintain their weight or trying to lose weight.  It is also great protein source for Vegans.   The directions imply that you can use a shaker cup which would be great for anyone on the go.
So I blended my smoothie with oat milk, coarsely ground flax, Maca, frozen banana, frozen strawberries, and a full scoop of the 365 Plant Protein Smoothie and hit blend topped it off with coconut shavings.   I was very impressed with the flavor of coconut as I am a fan of anything coconut, but I didn’t really taste the almond flavor at all.  The consistency of the smoothie was a bit  more textured than I’m used to with whey proteins, it’s probably due to the pea protein texture.
The flavor was exciting to try and the protein was a lot lighter on the tummy.  Would I try this again?  I sure would!  I really liked the combo of the three plant-based proteins.

Zero Waste, Eco Friendly, Vegan, DIY Toothpaste.

So….what have I been up to? Learning so much at the moment.  I’ve been making my own natural products, like my own natural toothpaste (pictured here) without all those harsh chemicals. I’m really loving the journey of becoming self-sustainable and less dependent on big corporate companies. There is something quite wonderful about creating something by hand with herbs, the natural elements, and essential oils. The best part about it is…..I love challenging myself!

Here is the Recipe I used for my Vegan, Natural, and Sustainable toothpaste.

I am a big fan of Uncle Harry’s toothpaste, so I’ve used up a few glass containers and I’m reuse one of them to make my toothpaste.  The great thing about Uncle Harry’s toothpaste containers is that they come in glass jars, which makes for a great no waste journey.

You will need:

One a small glass jar, or reusable container.

Baking Soda

Coconut Oil

Peppermint Essential Oil (for a minty flavor and helps support gums)

Bentonite Clay (for detoxifying effects and minerals)

Black activated Charcoal (For Natural whitening)

Arrowroot Powder (for sensitive teeth and gums, also used as a thickening agent)

So go a head and fill the jar half way up, then start to fill the baking soda the rest of the way.  Continue to mix until you get a paste like mixture.  If have sensitive teeth and gums I would start to mix 1/2 arrowroot powder with 1/2 baking soda.   Optional: If you have and want the benefits of Bentonite clay you can add 1/4 tsp to the mixture and 1/4 tsp of the black charcoal.  Lastly, you then add 5-6 drops of the peppermint essential oil and violá.  There you have it!  Never buy toothpaste again, no harsh chemicals, all natural, cut out the waste of the tube left behind.

I hope you enjoyed me sharing this with recipe with you and I hope that you join me on this journey of cutting back the waste that gets left behind with toothpaste tubes and tooth brushes in landfills.

“One Billion toothbrushes which take hundreds of years to decompose, end up in landfills every year”as quoted on the website:(yourmarkontheworld.com).

Try switching to Bamboo toothbrushes, that is compostable.

Since using my DIY toothpaste I’ve seen my teeth much brighter, and cleaner for a longer amount time.  I still enjoy the invigorating scent and tingling feeling I get from the peppermint essential oil.  My wallet has thanked me too!  I enjoy the simplicity that comes with it.  It feels great to be self-sustainable with less dependence on large companies.  It also has inspired me to do more DIY’s so look out for more.

Rebranding CityGirLifeStyle Blog……

“This photo was taken about 6 years ago in L.A….I never thought I’d be traveling this much and pursuing my deeper purpose & calling in life as an Eco blogger 💕🌱 (I have a feeling I’ll be returning soon enough ✌️)”

My first L.A. trip was my first trip traveling alone.  I was really nervous at first, the excitement, the thrill,  and adventure left me wanting more.  6 years ago I was following my dream of becoming a successful artist, but as I grew as a person and gained so much more experience so did my skills and interest.  No longer was I wanting just the aesthetic beauty and illusion I had ideally dreamed about.

I was looking for something much deeper, something that moved me, called to me, invoked passion in me.  I also had a desire to give back in a bigger way.   I didn’t want to be Superman, I wanted to save the world one day at a time in being conscious about the environment.

After my travels to Mexico in July of 2016 and my recent travels to Puerto Rico in April of 2017 it invoked in me something deeper.  I was inspired by the environment, the people, and their way of life.   I felt at home in Puerto Rico.  Coming back to Chicago since my Puerto Rico trip, has changed me so much.   After a couple of months of being back I started to put the pieces of all my experiences, skills, interests together and have been working with natural brands and networking with eco, natural, sustainable, local shops/local music scenes.  I’ve slowly started making the transition to re-branding CityGirLifeStyle.wordpress.com into an Eco Friendly Blog.  Expect to see some feel good products, working with conscious brands, Eco lifestyle tips, fashion, and moving into a more sustainable life…..the journey has been amazing already……join me for the journey🌱

I know these photos look really laid back, but the weather has been pretty cold here in Chicago and you can see the snow throughout this shoot.  These photos were taken on a slightly warmer day, and I wanted to show some of the city’s grit with a Sporty look and added comfort.
I’m just loving the menswear inspired look and this time I’m loving the sporty look of the Brand Stussy.
Finding ways to stay warm running from meetings to concerts and cocktails this Stussy beanie keeps me warm.  I opted to go with this long sleeve Japanese Stussy mens Jersey T-shirt and yes that means you too can purchase this shirt and hat too gentlemen!  I just love the Japanese characters on the sleeves and on the back side of the shirt.  The long sleeves definitely keep me warm.
Since the look is very sporty and masculine, I wanted to pair it up with a very feminine comfortable yet shapely fitted pencil skirt and with comfy 3 inch wedged Timberland booties.  I kept the jewelry on the cooler toned side, like silver and stainless steel to keep it monochrome.  I love this look, and I hope you do too.  Thank you Olga for photographing this look in the cold, but what can we say we are adventure seekers……

2015 New Year’s OOTD

New Years OOTDThis look is very City Chic, feminine, sparkly, and structured…..
New Years OOTD3

Yes, it was very cold out…..it took us 15 minutes to complete the shoot……Thank you Olga once again for making this possible.

New Years OOTD2

This has got to be one of the best New Year’s I’ve had yet!  I started out the evening joining a friend at the Dawson for a cocktail.  What does a City Girl order? Yup! you guessed right a “Manhattan” and they serve it just right, with my favorite aged cherry.  We enjoyed Dj John Simmons playing those tunes and we also enjoyed the second level where Revise spun some fun 90s tunes.  We later met up with another friend and tried to make it to a loft party thrown by dj collective called the Boogiemunsters.  As we quickly tried to make it in time for the countdown we were stuck looking for parking.  So the three of us girls made the best of it as we blew our party favor horns in the car to Prince playing on the radio.  We finally found a parking space just to find two men occupying the space, while they were lighting up fireworks in front of the car……it was both scary and magical all at the same time.  We finally made it to the party and it was non stop dancing to great music all night………then we headed to get breakfast and on our way home we saw the most beautiful sunrise coming up on the lake.

December Haul and Favorites…….<3

“For beautiful eyes look for the good in others; for beautiful lips, speak only words of kindness; and for poise, walk with the knowledge that you are never alone” -Audrey Hepburn

December Haul and favorites

1.Exfoliating Face Brush (Sephora)

Great for exfoliation and using with Cream cleansers. Also sensitive skin friendly.

2.Eye Serum, Minerals from the Dead Sea (TJ Maxx)

This one’s more of a gel like consistency, absorbs quickly.

2. Sibu Seabuckthorn Moisturizer (TJ Maxx)

Have not tried this one yet…..but heard good things about it.  Will review it and update you next month.

3. Cuticle Nippers,Earth Therapeutics (TJ Maxx)

My old nippers were dull and nippers can be quite expensive.  These were only $4.99 Worked wonderfully and made the job easier.

4. Perfume Armani Mania (Macy’s)

I’ve been using this perfume all month.  Has a light and warm musk scent with hints of vanilla and spice.  It reminds me of the smell of a little china doll…..

5. Rose Shower Gel:La Florentina Italy (TJ Maxx)

In December I’ve been liking more shower gels than soaps.  I find that the skin can be a bit more sensitive during the winter months so I’ve been enjoying the lovely scent of Roses.  Plus this is made in Italy……ahhhh……

6. Mary Kay (Primer and Luminous Foundation)

My friend was selling Mary Kay and I decided to try out a couple of their products.  I’ve used the foundation a few times…..gives a very luminous dewy finish….holds up throughout the day.  I need to use it a bit more to see how it does through out the month.  I have been using the primer every day and have liked the formula of this primer.  It isn’t sloppy when foundation goes on, which is great.  It tends to balance out the natural oils throughout the day.  It does have a slight smell to the product but goes away throughout the day.  I would purchase again.

7. Perfume DKNY-Pure (Ulta)

This perfume is very lovely.  I tend to spritz this one on, when I will be in close quarters with guests, because it isn’t over powering.  It is infused with African Vanilla, which has a soft and warm scent.  I’ve received many compliments with this one.

8. Purse Brahmin Croc Two Tone (Ebay)

I bought this bag four years and would only wear it on special occasions.  This year I told myself I would wear it throughout December to gain more use out of it.  I have enjoyed it, and must say it’s one of my favorite purses this month.  It’s also a classic style that definitely has not faded.  Add a strap and wear it as a cross body bag.

9. High Waisted panties (Urban Outfitters)

I love these modern twist on a vintage style high-waist panties.  I am into comfort when it comes to under garments, and I have found that not many places sell High waist panties.  The Gap has select high waist panties, American Apparel does a version, and you can find Etsy sellers that make the handmade ones.  When I saw these, I was a bit nervous with the fit, so I sized up. I’m usually a small, but I sized up to a medium.  The fit was perfect, and they are super comfy.  During the holidays they are on sale for 4 for $19.

10. Vitamin C Cream, Minerals from the Dead Sea (TJ Maxx)

I am really impressed with this Day Cream.  It is super hydrating to the skin during the winter months.  It is a thick consistency but not pore clogging at all.  The skin absorbs it quickly, and it even helps make up apply more evenly.  It smells a little like oranges, how nice!

11. Candle:Pecksniff’s England in Jasmine&Frankincense (TJ Maxx)

I love the scent of this candle.  During the Holidays stores put out the extra sweet-smelling Candles that make you want to eat a dozen cupcakes.  They will also put all the tropical fruity smelling candles on sale.  I don’t like either choices during the cozy winters.  I prefer more musky, dark, amber, Frankincense, and earthy scents during the Winters…….love the smell of this one.

12. Hand made Almond & Shea Butter Lip balm by Aileen Solve

I love, love, love….this hand made lip balm made by a friend.  It has a wonderful almond smell to it, while the shea quickly absorbs into the lips.  This lip balm is unlike many store-bought lip balms, which stay on the top surface of the skin and feel all waxy.  I love this one, plus all natural ingredients.  Leave a comment below if you’d like to get your hands on this product.

13. Nail Polish, Sally Hansen:Black Tie, Black out (Walgreens)

Really loving these two nail polish this month.

Black Tie: is a very reptilian cyber iridescent blackish green color.  It definitely has a murky color but has a shimmer to it which is quite beautiful.  I’ve been in a dark minimal style and look lately, so if you’re looking for something dark that isn’t black, black tie is a great choice.

Black Out: Black Out is just as black as it gets…..I keep going back to this color…….I just love this color worn with a lot of silver and cool tone jewelry. Simple and Classic!

Tell me what you’ve been loving this month in the comments below..>>>

D.I.Y Depotting your candles……How to by the Mighty Blonde

“A candle burns out….and the sugar will always be refilled

Depotting your candles

Thanks to #MightyBlonde for her ‪#‎DIY‬ depot your candles video on#‎youtube‬…..http://youtu.be/gz8O2t8YXQ

Follow the link to learn how to depot your candles……or click the image^^^

This is a great way to reuse your candle jars.  Being a City Girl from Chicago my Studio is very petite, so space is limited.  I have been really excited and in a transitional lifestyle phase, where I want my fashion, Art, Music, and Living space to compliment each other.  My phase is an Abstract, Minimalist, Monochromatic, Modern style.  I have been scouting antique stores, thrift stores, even trendy stores for a modern looking sugar bowl.   So far my hunt had not been successful, and I wanted something within a budget.  I saw MightyBlonde’s DIY video and thought it would be a great project to work on.  I followed her instructions and voila! Filled the jar with turbinado sugar….the lid makes it easy to excess the sugar unlike some other hard to open jars.  Thanks so much MightyBlonde!

you’d be so proud of me
